John Yoshio Naka
1914 – 2004

I met John Naka back in 1968 at this home in Los Angeles when my wife and I were visiting the various Japanese Bonsai Nurseries in the area. The home was quite like others in the burbs from the front. But when you walked into Mr. & Mrs. Naka’s backyard you saw a collection of Bonsai that were beyond belief! Just like in the picture books, one masterpiece after another. Unbelievable. This was the quiet and modest man’s collection of his own works. What an artist.

Over the years my wife and I have maintained a conversation with Mr. & Mrs. Naka, discussing all things that good friends would discuss.

You may not have known this man, but he has influenced your relationship with Bonsai here in the United States of America far more than anyone else. He brought the hobby of Bonsai to us as a pastime that could be enjoyed and appreciated by all and not just the Japanese. Mr. Naka opened up a vista to anyone who would want to experience the fulfilling hobby of Bonsai.

He will be missed!
