Be Sweet To Your Bonsai!

The month of February is a very hard month for your Bonsai. From our years of experience in this wonderful hobby, more Bonsai die this month than any other.

Well, just what does this mean for you and your Bonsai?  Extra, extra care this month.  With March just a few days away this is the dark before the light, so to speak.

The winter months have been very hard on all our Bonsai here in this Great United States.  If your Bonsai have been outside they have suffered extreme cold and drying winds.  If your Bonsai have been inside they have endured shriveling dryness and hardly no light.  It takes a really healthy and hardy Bonsai to withstand this.

Now what can you do this month to make it easier on your Bonsai to get into March and the wonderful temperatures and longer day lengths?

These next reminders are for your indoor Bonsai or ones that you have protected inside during the winter months:

Be sure you are watering daily or at least every other day.  Your soil mixture should be such that the water flushes through just like a toilet.  It holds some moisture, but not much.  We say that your soil should be moist, but certainly not wet or soggy.

Give your Bonsai as much light as you can.   We say 4 to 6 hours of direct sun on a window sill.  Or if you use a plant light at least 18 hours each day with the light being about 12 inches from the Bonsai.

Begin slowly fertilizing your Bonsai to get it ready for the spring and its renewal.  We would normally fertilize at half strength this time of year.  We’ve found that this gives our deciduous Bonsai a lift they need to send out their beautiful foliage.

With just a little bit of extra care this time of year your Bonsai will reward you with yet another year of enjoyment.

Did You Know?

Did you know we have artificial Bonsai?

Yes, these are very high quality alternatives to the real ones.

Over the years we have sampled many, but these are the very best we have seen for the money.  If you have a place where you know a real Bonsai won’t grow…say on your TV or coffee table…this is the one for you.
