LOOK OUT THE WINDOW, LOOK AT YOUR
CALENDAR” |
It’s really hard for any of us to think
that spring is really here when we see the weatherman
saying there will be two feet of snow or negative
digits of wind chill. But it’s here
and we need to be thinking about our chores that
will need to be accomplished within just a few
weeks.
Repotting: That may or may not mean that
you need to root prune. This depends of
the variety of Bonsai. Most temperate climate
Bonsai require root pruning every three to five
years. Tropical Bonsai can need it every
year as they are more robust growers. You
can tell if your Bonsai needs root pruning by holding
the Bonsai by the trunk and slowly and carefully
removing it from the container. If the root
ball comes out in all one piece then it’s
time to root prune. If there is still
loose potting medium within the container then
you can wait another year. Tools needed
for this include a root rake or root pick which
will assist you in combing the roots. Either
a sickle or heavy duty pruners to cut the roots. You
must be extremely careful if you use your regular
pruning shears because you can cause disastrous
damage to your blades if you hit a rock or pebble. Of
course you need some fresh potting medium: either
Akadama, kanuma or fuji soil.

Wiring: Now is a great time to reshape or
even to start shaping your Bonsai. Most Bonsai
hobbyists will buy at least 3 sizes of wire … meaning
1.5, 2.5 and say 3.0 or some variation of this.

Fertilizer: You need to start fertilizing
now. Look at our liquid or organic fertilizers. They
are low strength which is just what you need for
your Bonsai. You are trying to keep your
Bonsai in good health, but don’t want it
to grow five feet in a year.

Look over our selection of
new and very excellent Books. You can always glean new perspectives
from any book you read. This is also pertinent
to the selection of magazines and DVDs that we
offer.
And above all – think
of this spring as a beautiful time to enjoy your
Bonsai and what they represent.
