Ahh! April!!! This is the best of times for the Bonsai Hobbyist!

Beautiful leaves, outstanding flowers…all the nice things about our Hobby are awakening now.

For those procrastinators who haven’t repotted, wired or root pruned just yet there may be a tiny window still left depending on your location. Here in the Dallas, Texas, area we should have root pruned in February or so. There is still time to repot if you don’t do the root pruning regimen.

Wiring can be done anytime, but it’s a great chore to do during the down days of winter. We now need to think of pruning and shaping as the new leaves and growth begin to appear. Please don’t wait too long to do your top pruning. This job needs to be done on a routine basis. It’s kind of like giving yourself a hair cut, but remember that the more often you do the tiny leaves coming on the tips of your branches the better your canopy will be later on. Have your Bonsai tools readily available during this period as there are terrific spurts of growth that just seem to happen overnight. But, above all, enjoy this time of year. It’s really a fantastic time…

Please don’t forget to fertilize during this time of year. You need to help your Bonsai have the energy to show off it’s pretty stuff and get it ready for the stressful summertime.

What’s happening at Dallas Bonsai Garden this Month?

We will be receiving a new shipment from Japan the middle of this month. There will be more Kokufu #80 books, new tools and many more supplies to help you in your Hobby.

Bonsai PotYour reception to our new line of plastic pots has been really great. From the feedback we’re getting here this was an exceptional find for our customers. They are well shaped and deep. Things that Bonsai need to flourish.

We just received the new shipment of seeds from Japan and are in the process of putting all these items back up on our internet catalog. A new item here is the Pinus thunbergii, mikawa. A highly sought after variety of Black Pine.
