| Has the weather got you down?
Are you stressed out with these high temperatures?
|
Have you noticed that there has
been a change in the air. That means we are starting
on the road to Fall and to a time when we can appreciate
the crisp mornings and comfortable days.
Your
Bonsai feels this too.
Your Bonsai will experience bursts
of growth this time of year because it loves these
temperatures. When the temperature
starts to hover above 90 degrees or so, our Bonsai
pretty much stops its growth and tries to hang on
in a survival mode. That
stiffling heat pattern has changed drastically in
just a few days. Our maples, persimmon and
conifers are all showing a happier foliage color
because of the less intense heat. Also, we
are now
losing daylight at a rate of 3 to 4 minutes a day. This
small and imperceptible daily loss of light will
soon start to
affect your Bonsai.
Now just what does that mean to you
and your Bonsai? Here is what we suggest:
You
should begin to cut down on your fertilization
regimen. You need to start using the 0-10-10
fertilizer so that your Bonsai will not be
forming new growth that will be susceptible to
frost or freeze damage a few months from now. Tropical
Bonsai can exhibit damage when the temperatures
go down around 39 degrees. Of course you
don’t want that to happen.
Fukien
Tea trees are happy at 60 degrees and above but
start turning black when the temperatures drop
below 60. So be sure to watch your friendly
weatherman to see just what the lows are going
to be. |

We fertilize
all year, but at different rates and use different
formulas. The exact rate depends on the potting
medium. As we have recommended before, you should
use a potting
medium (available on the website) that is very,
very porous. This
will allow the water and the fertilizer to
flush through the soil. At this time of year, you
should slow down the amount of Nitrogen fertilizer
you use. Your goal is to harden off your Bonsai leaves,
needles and tiny branches, not produce green growth.
