Relax, Breathe and Spend Time with your Bonsai

Well, a lot has taken place during this month of November. Daylight Savings has been put to rest for another year, and we now have a president elect that hopefully will be able to solve all these worldly problems that face us.  But, as you all know your Bonsai are still there in their peaceful pose just waiting for you to lose yourself in their magic.  It goes without saying that in these stressful times we all need something to take our minds off the problems of the world and just relax with our Bonsai.

Whether your Bonsai is an indoor or outdoor type, you need to be vigilant this time of year to their very simple needs.

Water – Indoors you are starting to use central heat.  This drops your humidity to desert levels.  Be sure to water often.  A humidity tray filled with nachi rocks will aid in your efforts to give your Bonsai outdoor humidity inside your home.  If you overwinter your Bonsai outside you still should not forget to water.  Here in Dallas, Texas, we water just about every day because of our extremely porous soils.  It only takes a few minutes to do this chore, and it gives you another chance to say hello to your Bonsai and let’s you check their health and overall status.

Light – Indoors you might have a problem with your Bonsai receiving adequate light.  If it’s inconvenient to use a plant light then you need to place your Bonsai on a windowsill and let it/them get at least 4 to 6 hours of sunlight through the window.  That’s minimum.  The more light you give them the more dense your foliage will be.  If your Bonsai shows you only sparse foliage then the lighting is usually the problem.  If you overwinter your Bonsai in a cool area (above freezing) you still need some light even though their metabolism has dropped because of the lower temperatures. When we see Bonsai in Japan they are in low light in areas that are spotlessly clean of any debris.

November is a time of thanksgiving for what the year has brought. It's no different for your bonsai. They thank us by giving us beauty throughout the year and we thank them by taking care of them. Of course you will take care of your Bonsai during this Holiday season…now won’t you???
