Happy Holiday's from All of Us at Dallas Bonsai Garden!

Tropical Bonsai and 2 feet of snow.

Even with 2 feet of snow on the ground, you can be growing Bonsai! It's true! Tropical bonsai absolutely need to be indoors during the Winter, but that's actually a good thing.

In the Summer months, most people turn their air conditioner down to 65. But in the Winter months, they turn their heater up to 75. If your indoor temperatures are over 68 degrees and you put your bonsai in Southerly facing windows, your tropical bonsai will beef up and get healthy - within reason of course, first they are Bonsai in small pots and second, the photo period each day in the Winter is short.

Even with this, you can still ensure your tropicals stay healthy and don't drop leaves. How? Humidity!

When you break plant care down to it's bare essentials, you have light, water, air and fertilizer. All of these together make up the plants environment. When you control the environment, you can get amazing growth and beauty from your plants.

So you want light to be as intense as the plant desires for as long as possible each day; you want the water to be as much as the plant can use, no more, no less; you want the air to have the precise humidity that your plant wants, and you want to supply your plant with a wide range of "well balanced" nutrition. For plants, this means minerals - NPK and all the trace minerals in tiny quantities.

In the Winter, the light is out of your control unless you want to buy indoor grow lights. The watering and fertilizing are realtively easy to control. The main concern indoors is the humidity. Your heater will suck all of the humidity out of the air in your house leaving it like a desert.

So what do you do? First, realize that humidity makes everything feel warmer. So you will be more comfortable in your house with humidity. That's why the South is so uncomfortable in the Summer - the humidity. So boil water on the stove, use a humidifier, spray the leaves on your plants and use humidity trays. All of these will help to raise the humidity in your home and not only will YOU be more comfortable, your plants will too!

Gift Ideas for that someone special - even if it's you!
Books You can never have enough books. Three authors may say the same thing, but how one says it will be more clear to you than the others. It’s like having cook books, some are more clear to you than others in defining just what you need to execute the job to perfection.
Tools This is a great time to add to your collection. Why? Well, Japanese tools have been developed for just about every job that you will encounter when working on your Bonsai. They are rightly named, Special Tools for Special Tasks! May I remind you that in Japanese tools we carry only one grade of cutters. This is the professional grade. Cutters are defined as concave cutters, wire cutters and others. On Scissors/Shears there are innumerable versions from the $12.95 Shear up to $300.00 Shears. In Japanese tools you do get what you pay for. The differences shows up in the quality of the blades and the finish.
Instructional DVDs We have some excellent editions that will help anyone in the hobby to understand visually how to do the tasks required to keep your Bonsai happy and healthy.

Bonsai Tips for December

Our new monthly Bonsai tips are brought to you, by special arrangement, courtesy of the John Yoshio Naka Family. You can find the full year’s guide and a whole lot more in the book Bonsai Techniques I by John Naka. We have both of Mr. Naka’s books, Bonsai Techniques I and Bonsai Techniques II, available for immediate purchase.

All bonsai should be dormant by now. In colder areas they will have been put in cold frames, or other storage for the winter.

Location: Guard against any and all of Nature's changeable weather conditions.

Watering:The same rule applies here as last month. Watch watering under frozen conditions. If soil is kept too wet the pot may crack.

Trimming amd training:
Can be done under caution.

Fertilizing:None.

Transplanting:Only bare-root nursery stock can be transplanted in a mixture of sand and very little soil. Do not pot any bare-root until spring.

Grafting:December, January, and February are the best months for grafting conifers, for this is the coldest season and the trees are completely dormant. At this time there is no pitch to isolate scion from understock.

Miscellaneous:It is a good time to collect native materials in the Southern states.
