The knife is used today for that purpose, but additionally used to cut the roots and remove old soil from Bonsai during the root pruning process. A very heavy duty tool that has an overall length of 12½". The blade is 6¾" by 1 5/8" wide. It has a lacquered wooden handle and comes with a leatherette sheath and leatherette belt loop. The blade is concave and has one side that is saw toothed and the other side with a normal cutting edge. A very good utilitarian knife. Here are some interesting tidbits about the product: Horu is a verb, meaning to dig out. Hori Hori reminds done to dig or to crop something. It is steel protected by a black lacquer finish. Its main usage is to dig, crop wild edible plants and sprouts in the Spring by people wandering in the deep mountain areas and collecting them. Very versatile.
