Japanese Oiso Sand
This excellent product comes from a particular section of Japan and is prized for its beautiful colors and size. Oiso, Japan is on the seacoast of Japan just a few miles from Tokyo in Kanagawa Prefecture.
The overall appearance is a slate gray, with no brown, but dark gray, medium gray and a few white pebbles. It's about 1/4 the size of pea gravel, being approximately 1/8" in size. This is an expensive product, but it can't really be duplicated. There is no substitute for this beautiful coloration.

Overall Rating Quality ValueOiso sand is my favorite top dressing for trees. It is just the right size to look like a natural ground cover. And the gray of the sand with the green of the trees gives you that classic Zen garden look. I admit it is a little pricy but it really adds a touch of class. You don't even have to cover the whole ground surface area, some times I just sprinkle some on to liven up the bonsai soil.
