Satsuki Azalea - Medium
Named for the month in which it flowers (Satsuki is Japanese for “fifth month”), Rhododendron indicum is the perfect bonsai for you if you want a tree that offers some eye candy for your efforts. The bright, beautiful blooms may be solid or patterned, and the same plant may produce different patterns over the years. Satsuki is a favorite among the hundreds of Azalea cultivars because of its hardy nature and small leaves.
The combination of Rhododendron and Azalea in the name can be confusing, as most people think of these as two different plants. Historically they were indeed separate genera, however in the late 20th century botanists finally collectively made up their minds and grouped the two together into one genus – Rhododendron.
If you’re looking for a medium-sized bonsai that doesn’t have extreme light needs, may be pruned into almost any form you dream up, and is beautiful to look at, this tree is the one for you.
